To mark the start of the three month long Buddhist Lent, Thai Buddhists take part in parades where they carry large candles to their local temple. The people of Ubon Ratchathani go one step further by carving large wax candles and figurines that take several months to complete. They then parade these through the town on the day after the full moon in July. In Thai, this day is known as Khao Phansa. The parade takes place on the roads around Thung Si Muang in the city center.
