The so-called Red Lotus Lake in Kumphawapi district of Udon Thani is a large natural freshwater lake of pinkish red water lilies covering an area of 36 square kilometres with an abundance of aquatic animals, plants, and birds. It has an outstanding ecosystem that has attracted a lot of Thai as well as international researchers to visit for study. In December-February of every year, the pinkish red blossoms of water lilies will be in full bloom and blanket the vast surface of the Nong Han Lake as far as the eye can see, hence, the name “Red Lotus Sea” in Thai.
